Look beyond the equity curve.

Six questions help you understand what an Expert Advisor test report actually shows — and where its evidence ends.

01 / EVIDENCE LEVELS

Different observations answer different questions.

This is an evaluation framework, not an ONYX performance claim. A backtest does not imply that demo-forward or live records exist.

    Historical test

    Can show

    Shows what the rules did on the selected data and settings.

    Cannot prove

    Cannot establish how the EA will perform on unseen data or with another broker.

  2. 02

    Demo forward

    Can show

    Observes the current system in a simulated account without risking capital.

    Cannot prove

    Cannot reproduce every live fill, cost or emotional decision.

  3. 03

    Live record

    Can show

    Shows actual account execution and realised costs for that account.

    Cannot prove

    Cannot guarantee that the next market period will behave the same way.

02 / SIX QUESTIONS

A checklist before a conclusion.

Use it for any Expert Advisor, including ONYX. Do not decide from one attractive number.

  1. 01 / REPRODUCE

    Can you rerun it?

    Save the EA version, Inputs, broker symbol, dates, deposit, leverage and modelling mode. Without these, a screenshot of the final balance is not a reproducible report.

  2. 02 / DATA

    What prices were used?

    Check the test interval, history quality and whether ticks are real or generated. The MT5 modes do not use identical price paths or spreads.

  3. 03 / RISK

    How deep was the decline?

    Read equity as well as balance drawdown, the longest losing periods and the size of individual losses. A high ending balance can coexist with unacceptable risk.

  4. 04 / ACTIVITY

    How many decisions occurred?

    Inspect trade count, distribution across months and whether a few outliers explain most of the result. Profit factor without sample context is not enough.

  5. 05 / COSTS

    Does it survive realistic friction?

    Record spread, commission and swap; compare broker specifications and test sensitivity to less favourable execution. A backtest is not a promise of live fills.

  6. 06 / STABILITY

    Does it depend on one period?

    Keep a later, untouched period for evaluation. If a small date or settings change reverses the conclusion, treat the apparent edge as fragile.
